...that thing when you just, randomly, look back on something you wrote a year or so ago - say, a story you started but didn't get past the second chapter of - and start to read it again and, even though you know you shouldn't because it's your own work, go, like, "wow, this was actually good'". Is that just me, or does anyone else have that sometimes too?

I read my old stuff all the time - usually to motivate myself to do the new stuff. Though my reactions to the quality of my old writing range from "meh" to "what was I smoking when I thought of this?"...and, ya know, the occasional gem pops up.

Usually I hate my old stuff when I look back on it, but there's just this one story attempt - actually, based off one of the interests of my distant past - that I started a year or so ago and every time I let myself go back to it, it surprises me because it seems much better than anything I thought I could actually write. And if I'm still thinking that a year on... well, it's got to count for something, right? XD;;

When I run with subjects I really like, the result tends to be better. Then again, I like rocks - but who wants to read a story about rocks?
