Brief History: Hatched from his egg during Twilight Sparkle’s entrance exam for Princess Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns, Spike was raised under the princess’ watchful eye until Twilight became Celestia’s personal student and was old enough to look after him herself. From that point on, Spike became not only the young unicorn’s assistant in her studies, but also her best – or more accurately, only – friend. When Twilight was eventually sent to Ponyville to study friendship, it was Spike who accompanied her, and who has continued to prove his worth as her number-one assistant many times since.
When Twilight and most of their friends started getting invitations to attend a school outside of Equestria, Spike was initially dismayed when they made to head off without him; after helping Twilight pack, the baby dragon found himself at a loose end in the library, and not even the opportunity to spend more time with Rarity could take the edge of Spike's concern for Twilight. How would she manage without her number one assistant - that was, him - there to assist in her studies? So when, a few days later, Spike recieved his own invitation to the school, he didn't waste a moment in signing himself up too.
