Star Swirl the Bearded

Brief History: Older even than Equestria itself, Star Swirl is an extremely powerful unicorn sorcerer. His one failure, in the field of Magicka, was his lack of real understanding of friendship. Although he wrote extensively on the subject, and could explain it, he never personally understood it. Never a very social stallion, Star Swirl left his apprentice Clover to advise the Unicorns, disappearing from the scene when the Earth Ponies elected Chancellor Puddinghead as their ruler, believing the Ponies in the area were doomed.
He reappeared on the scene for a brief time to tutor the Princesses, Celestia and Luna, helping them research the Elements of Harmony. But, his own shortcoming prevented him from bonding with any of the Elements, and he disappeared from official history early in Equestria's history. Growing tired of the attention he got from everypony, Star Swirl, breaking the habits of a lifetime, developed a spell he did not record, and propelled himself forward through time several centuries, hoping to be able to continue his studies in peace.
Arriving in the present, he was dismayed to find he was still a popular figure, if somewhat obscure to the populace at large. So, when he received an invitation to teach at Dante's Academy, he accepted, and left Equestria once again.
